We are looking for a Living Liver Donor.

This is my dad at his birthday party last year September, 2006. His name is Garry Gerenshteyn, He lives in Toronto, Canada. He is a 57 years old who contracted Hepatitis C through tainted blood transfusion about 15 years ago. He is in desperate need of a liver transplant. His blood type is O positive. He is on a waiting list with Toronto General Hospital. The wait is 1-3 years and the doctors sugest my dad will not live that long to wait for a liver from the transplant list.

Why Consider Living Donor Liver Transplantation? What are the Risks to the Donor?
Adults on liver transplant list in Canada currently wait 1-3 years for organ transplants. Unfortunatly, about 15% of patients waiting for transplants will die before a cadaveric liver becomes available.

Who can be a Donor?
  • a blood relative, spouse, or friend who shares a compatible blood group with the patient
  • between ages of 18 and 60 years
  • in good health and a suitable match
  • freely willing to donate

As with any major surgery there are risks. For this procedure, these include:

  • problems with the anaesthetic, wound infections, pneumonia and blood clots in the lungs or legs
  • bleeding
  • bile leakage
  • psychological stress

These risks will be fully explained when donors meet with the transplant team at the Hospital.

  • What does the operation involve? What are the Advantages of Living Donor Transplantation?
The donor surgery lasts about 6 hours. The surgeons remove about half of the donor's liver, which is then transplanted into the recipient. Within 6 to 12 weeks the liver regenerates (grows) to approximately 90% of its original size and function returns to normal.

The hospital stay is, on average, 5-7 days. Donors can usually return to work after 6 to 12 weeks.
    Advantages include:

  • shorter waiting time - the trasnsplant can be done before the recipient's health deteriorates further
  • high-quality donor organ
  • planned, "elective" operation
  • opportunity for the donor to "give the gift of life" to a friend in need.
